In a discussion with Laura Bush at the African First Ladies Summit, First Lady Michelle Obama commented about how living in the White House is comparable to living in a prison,
“There are some prison elements to it,” she joked. “But it’s a really nice prison.”
Regardless of the context of this statement, I do not see how anyone today can be unaware of the change fame would bring to your life. In our age of celebrity, photographers make big money following famous people to get a money shot. All one has to do to know this is stand in line at the grocery store and glance at the tabloid papers on the rack.
Furthermore, I have been to enough political events with well known politicians to witness how they too are treated like celebrities in the crowd, depending on their perceived influence. I would bet this is the reason many American's who would be great leaders for our nation select to remain anonymous rather than run for office.
After reading about estimates of travel expenses for Presidents and their families, whether for business or pleasure, to hear a comment like this is nauseating. By the time a politician and their spouse get to this level of the system, they cannot claim ignorance to the price they must pay. They made a choice to continue on this road. They selected the "prison" life they now live. Forgive me if I am not crying a river for any one of them who do not like the price they must pay for this choice.
As former First Lady Laura Bush quickly pointed out a First Lady has a private chef.
American's across the nation have difficulty putting food on the table, purchasing gas for their cars to get to work, or finding a job that can support their families. Part of the reason is because we have a President and First Lady who believe destroying the coal industry and increasing energy costs will be good for our nation...
...the tax increase on the wealthy just didn't cut it and will not effect the middle class at all...
*coughBScough*
Well, how is all of this working out for us as a nation? I don't know about you, but we have less in our bank account this year than last year. We are preparing for an aditional decrease next year. We are not going on a nice family vacation because, instead, we are helping fund trips to Ireland ($5 million estimate), Africa ($60 to $100 million), Aspen (at least $83,000), The Hampton's (Millions) for the First Family .
Mrs. Obama, if you don't like the prison you selected, the door is not locked, nor is anyone keeping you confined. Heck, I will throw a celebration party for your early release. You and Mr. Obama are invited of course.
