Thomas Jefferson believed in liberty. He believed the people
should rule our government. His passion for these beliefs provided the vision for our nation. Jefferson served in many capacities throughout his lifetime in a way that helped mold the direction of our country. He was not a perfect man, but you cannot look at the Declaration of Independence and fail to see the brilliance of his ideas, and how these ideas were crafted into declaring freedom for a new nation from a tyrannical government.
Thomas Jefferson was a close friend with John Adams, another member of the committee charged with writing the Declaration of Independence. They met at the 1775 Continental
Congress. If ever there was a friendship blessed by God, this one was. They served the people together as President and Vice President, Jefferson losing to Adams by three electoral votes.
Unfortunately, their friendship suffered a period of
hardship when President Adams appointed Cabinet members who Jefferson was not
fond of. Jefferson saw these appointments as a hindrance to what he could accomplish as President, the role he was about to assume. However, reconciliation came many years after they both left
office.
Jefferson and Adams died hours apart on the 50th Anniversary
of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Adams died after Jefferson.
It is reported his last words were, “Jefferson
still survives.”
