The Silence is Deafening!

Yesterday, Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) stood for around 13 hours on the floor of the Senate to filibuster the confirmation of John Brennan as Director of the CIA.

Rarely do we see a member of Congress have the conviction, or stamina, to use this outlet to protest an issue. To filibuster, a member of Congress has to take the floor and refuse to yield it back to the President of the chamber. They cannot stop talking. They cannot take a potty break. They cannot leave the podium where there is no stool to sit on for the duration of their speech. They would only get a break if another member asks them a question on the floor.

Senator Paul understood his decision to filibuster Brennan’s confirmation would not end in the President having to put up another nominee. But, he decided to stand as a voice to the American people in hopes to get a simple answer from the President – American citizen’s cannot be targeted on American soil and killed with the use of a drone.

Honestly, the fact this question had to be presented to any sitting President is frightening. The rule of law in the United States tells us there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. But then again, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) accused Mitt Romney, a candidate for the presidency, of being a felon during the election in 2012 and basically said if it was not true, Romney needed to prove it.

Just as when Reid made his slanderous statements against Romney without any proof, the silence of those on the left about giving the POTUS power to call for an American to be killed by a drone on American soil, making the POTUS judge, jury and executioner, is deafening.

Apparently, John Cusak, one of my favorite actors even though he believes very differently than I do politically, tweeted the question asking where the Democrats were during Senator Paul’s grand exhibition. Well, Mr. Cusak, unfortunately the Democratic Party has created an IT’S COME TO THIS moment – it is more important to stand with your party than to stand on personal conviction.

Not saying anything publically against another member is actually one of the Democratic Party’s strengths. Think about it. When was the last time you have heard members of the Democrat Party speak out against another member? When Anthony Weiner or Bill Clinton had to confess publically they had lied about the accusations of sexual misconduct while they were on the job serving the American people, their party members stood with them as if it was no big deal. These men lied to the American people, much less their own wives, and they are well respected men in their party.

I find it shameful that only one Democrat, Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) had the conviction to make an appearance in support of Rand Paul’s question to the POTUS. I am sure there are more, who in their heart of hearts, know they will not be upholding their oath to protect the Constitution if they allow a president to hold this power against another American.

Scarily, yesterday, the silence was deafening.
